Prominent Thurrock Businessman and Rotarian Ted Saxton has died age 91

It was with great sadness that the Club heard the news that Ted had passed away in Darenth Valley hospital on Monday May 16th.

Born Charles Edward Victor Saxton, Ted returned from a distinguished army career to join the family firm of E.V Saxton & Sons in Grays.

After the death of his father Charles, Ted took the reins of the company and saw it grow from a modest tobacconist in Orsett Road to become a regional wholesale centre with several retail outlets in the borough under the management of his brother John, and cousins David, Roger and Brett.

He was extremely active in the local community. He was chairman of the bench at Grays Magistrates Court through the 1970s and 80s.

He was also chairman of Grays Round Table and a latterly a President of Grays Thurrock Rotary Club.

He was a key member of Thurrock Hockey Club for whom he made more than 500 appearances and was a vice president.

Although moving to Farningham in Kent in the late 1970s, he maintained his links with Thurrock and last year was made a life-member of Grays Rotary Club in recognition of his service to the community.

His funeral is at 11am Wednesday 1st June at Farningham Church and afterwards at The Lion, Farningham
