For more than three decades, Rotary has been giving disabled and disadvantaged young people the chance to enjoy new experiences, taste adventure and have fun trips and days out.
This year, on Wednesday 9th July, on a beautifully hot and sunny day our club took two full coach loads of children, their carers and teachers from Treetops School down to Adventure Island and the Sealife Centre at Southend-on-Sea, Essex and great fun was had by all.
However, two days before the event, club organiser, Bob Paterson thought everything was going fine until he got a call from the coach company we had agreed travel with, cancelling our booking. Over the next 48 hours and after numerous telephone calls, Bob managed to arrange two new coaches and saved the day. Well done Bob.
The rides at Adventure Island get scarier every year, or is it that us Rotarians are getting older. The children however were in their element, watched over, of course by some very diligent carers and teachers. At the end of the day we all returned exhausted and it was high fives all round when we exited the coach back at the school.
Thanks to Peter Hoche for arranging the children’s food and drink, all very kindly donated by Tesco Stores at Lakeside, to the two coach operators who jumped in to help at the last minute, Steve at SRM Travel and Toni at Marc 1 Travel. Plus to club members, Bob Paterson, Ray Smallcombe, Danny Reynolds, Mark Jones, Andrew Roast and Clive Page, who attended and helped out. Thanks also to Pam the Rotary coordinator from Thorpe Bay RC.
