On 2nd October Captain Don Cockerill, MBE, gave a fascinating talk on his 14-year life as a Thames Pilot and showed us a fascinating film, of doing his job in mountainous seas and unpiloted ships causing devastation by crashing into dockside cranes. Don gave a similar presentation at the recent District Conference.
Don is a Mercy Ships Ambassador and explained a little about this charities work. Mercy Ships completes thousands of urgent operations onboard its floating hospitals, the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy. Mercy Ships volunteers also work closely with host nations to improve the way healthcare is delivered across a country, by training and mentoring local medical staff and renovating hospitals and clinics. Since it was founded in 1978, Mercy Ships have worked with over 55 countries providing services valued at more than £1.3 billion. Further details can be found on the Mercy Ships website: mercyships.org.uk.
Following the presentation, the Club was glad to donate £500.00 to the charity.
