Hugely successful CHARITY GOLF DAY raises over £4,000
The Grays Thurrock Club held a successful Charity Golf Day at Orsett Golf Club on Tuesday 16th August. Through the hard work of members and in particular, Ray Smallcombe and Ivan North, we attracted 22 teams of four golfers per team for the event. The day started with a delicious bacon roll, tea and coffee in the clubhouse and after a talk from the organiser, Ray Smallcombe, on the course rules etc, everyone set off to their starting tees to wait for the shot gun start at 1.00pm.
Not even a downpour just before the start, dampened the enthusiasm the 88 golfers taking part. After a great game of golf, the last team came off the course at about 5.00pm and everyone relaxed and enjoyed drinks in the bar. Later there was a dinner in the clubhouse, a raffle draw and the prizegiving. Every competitor said they had a great day and would come again for next year’s event, pencilled in for 25th August 2023.
The standard play was high with 9 players carding over 40 points. The overall winner was Mr Tony Justin who won by count back over Mr W. Plaice, who took second also after a count back over Mr B. Shelton, who was placed 3rd.
The winning Lady was Mrs Tina Roast and the winning team was Messrs, T Hillier, S. Haines, G. Hillier and D. Whitford and there were six nearest the hole prizes awarded. All the winners were very pleased with their bottles of Champagne, vouchers and sleeves of golf balls.
Thanks to our main sponsor Griffin Residential and secondary sponsors, Thurrock Garden Centre, Rowland Hall Solicitors and Bland Baker Accountants and the many hole sponsors. The club managed to raise over £4,000 for our charity fund and at the prizegiving Club President, Clive Page, thanked participants for their competitive spirit and generosity and confirmed the Club would certainly put all the money raised to good charitable use. Special thanks go to Ray Smallcombe and his team who organised and ran such a successful event, also to all the club members who donated prizes for the raffle. The main sponsor even agreed to support next year’s event, what a result for the Clubs first ever Charity Golf Day!
